NFL stadiums are ramping up security at stadiums across the country and Gillette is no exception. Officials in Foxboro are tightening up procedures ahead of Monday night when the Patriots host the Buffalo Bills.
The NFL has said there is no credible threat that’s known to an NFL venue but after one of the targeted sites in Paris was a soccer stadium, officials in Foxboro aren’t leaving anything to chance.
More than 60,000 fans will pack into Gillette Stadium with millions of people tuning in across the globe Monday night.
"Given the circumstances that have occurred in France over the last several days, we’re very much concerned with making sure that we’re not missing any key points," said Foxboro Police Chief Edward O’Leary.
"Every time you’re coming in on the highway there’s plenty of police out there but I think a little bit of heightened security not only will make it a safer environment but will give fans a little peace of mind," said Harrison Bateman, an employee at Patriot Place.
Heightened security is headed to Gillette. Police officials held a meeting this week to discuss exactly what needs to be done.
"We had people there from Gillette Stadium security, as well as the NFL, representatives from Massachusetts State Police, as well as the FBI," said O’Leary.
The NFL released a statement requesting an increased security presence at all stadiums. Some venues used bomb-sniffing dogs and added troopers to parking lots. But Foxboro Police have a different plan.
"Not specifically more officers but we’re going to be deploying them so they will be very visible," explained O’Leary.
Many Patriots fans were relieved to hear about the extra focus on safety ahead of the big game. And Foxboro’s Police Chief says those fans play a major role in securing the stadium.
"Having fans coming are an added line of defense and I encourage people if you see something that you think is suspicious, well then say something. Call 911," O’Leary said.
Foxboro Police along with the NFL is recommending that fans do not bring any bags with them to the stadium. But if they have to, bags must be in compliance with the NFL’s clear bag policy.
