PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Back at the start of the year, I decided to embark on this journey with the goal of improving my health through weight loss. I’ve been happy to bring you, the viewer, along with me on that journey. In some ways, I’ve been successful. In other ways, I’ve had some challenges. All in all, I’ve learned a lot, and that’s all part of the journey.
If you’ve been following along, you’ll remember I met with a dietitian first. The overall theme of that conversation was the importance of using quality ingredients.
Evolution Nutrition Registered Dietitian Kelly Markiewicz says, “If you’re getting good quality food – so less processed, fewer ingredients, less overall added sugar.”
I decided my healthy eating habits needed a jump start, so I started with a 30-day round of clean eating, a program called Whole30.
Markiewicz says, “It is a primarily anti-inflammatory type of plan. It starts off with more of an elimination from the start, and then you can gradually reintroduce certain foods.”
It took lots of planning and meal prepping, but it was worth it for me. For 30 days, I wasn’t allowed to weigh myself, but I did notice I could fit into one of my suit jackets for the first time in months:

After the 30 days, I continued to focus on whole, unprocessed foods in a more relaxed approach while considering my next steps. I may try intermittent fasting for a while.
I also met with a personal trainer at Boston Sports Clubs.
Boston Sports Clubs Personal Fitness Trainer Lianne Packard says, “Exercise helps you beef up that number of calories per day. So, if you’re looking for weight loss, you definitely want to get some exercise in there.”
She showed me the ropes, literally and figuratively, of exercising for weight loss. Unfortunately, several days after we shot that story, I suffered a shoulder injury that was completely unrelated to my visit to the gym. That injury has kept me on the sidelines, but my shoulder has healed enough now that I should be able to head back to the gym and make exercise part of my journey once again.
My total weight lost so far: 20 pounds, but I’m purposely slowing that down to avoid exceeding the recommendation of 2 pounds per week.
My journey is not over. Look for #ABC6JourneyToHealth on Facebook and Twitter to continue to follow along!
