Tiverton High School Tigers varsity football forfeits season citing injuries
TIVERTON, R.I. (WLNE) — Tiverton High School announced Friday that its varsity football team will forfeit the remainder of the current season.
According to a statement from Tiverton Superintendent of Schools Christopher Haskins, the Tiverton Tigers will discontinue the season due to a “combination of low player participation and a significant number of injuries.”
“Our top priority has always been the safety and well-being of our student-athletes,” said Haskins.
“In Week 2, we faced a difficult situation with only 12 players available, forcing us to make the tough decision to forfeit that week’s game. Since then, we’ve taken a hard but necessary look at what is realistic for the remainder of the season.”
Haskins also said that the current roster lists 25 players, but several are unable to play due to injuries, and 16 are freshmen and sophomores.
These factors are not conducive to player safety, according to Haskins.
The junior varsity football schedule will continue for the remaining slate of games this season, and opposing teams remaining on the varsity schedule have the options of winning by forfeit or filling the slots with JV games against the Tigers.
“We understand the impact this has on our student-athletes, their families, and the communities of our league opponents, and we do not take this decision lightly,” said Haskins.
“We remain committed to supporting our football program and ensuring its long-term sustainability. We look forward to returning to varsity competition in the 2026 season with a stronger, healthier roster.”
