Tiverton man charged with DUI, after crashing with three minors in car

TIVERTON, R.I. (WLNE)- A Tiverton man was arrested last week after crashing with another car, and then into a fence.
Investigators got to the scene of the crash at Stafford Road and Kitchener Street at around 1:08 p.m. on February 13.
Officers spoke with the driver, 36-year-old Stephen Souza, who told them that he was driving southbound on Stafford Road and hit an oncoming car.
There were three minors in the car at the time of the crash, a 16 year old boy, a 15 year old boy and a 4 year old girl.
Police were able to smell alcohol on Souza’s breath during their conversation.
Souza then failed to pass standardized field sobriety tests, and blew a .291 in a preliminary breath test.
He was placed under arrest at the scene and taken to police headquarters, where he refused to submit a chemical test.
Souza was charged with the following:
- DUI of liquor/drugs with a child under 13 as a passenger
- Refusal to submit a chemical test
