Tiverton man sentenced in hit-and-run death of cyclist

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — A Tiverton man has been sentenced in a 2020 hit-and-run crash case that left a cyclist dead.

Paul Gomes, 27, was sentenced to eight years in prison, with three-and-a-half years to serve at the ACI, four-and-a-half years suspended sentence, eight years probation and a three-year loss of license upon release.

Gomes will also have to pay a $5,000 fine.

On May 22, 2020, Gomes struck a cyclist Elias Joel Velasquez Chavez, 40, on West Main Road in Middletown while operating a Honda Accord.

Gomes fled the scene and Velasquez Chavez died from his injuries at the scene.

Gomes was arrested on June 11, 2020.
