Tiverton man sentenced to 5 years for motor vehicle crash death

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WLNE) — Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn III said that a 30-year-old Tiverton man was sentenced to a state prison sentence for killing a man while driving under the influence of drugs.

Alexander Farias pled guilty to charges of manslaughter while operating under the influence, Possession of Class A, C, and E drugs, and unlawful possession of a large capacity firearm feeding device.

Quinn said that in June of 2021, Farias was driving on Route 24 southbound in Fall River while high on fentanyl and cocaine.

The district attorney said that Farias began drifting into the left lane before entering the median, which caused his car to start spinning.

The car then entered the northbound lane and started rolling and collided with the victim, 35-year-old James Dumas, Jr. of Lakeville. Dumas died from his injuries.

Quinn said that Farias was then transported to the hospital where his blood was drawn for medical purposes, which found the drugs in his system.

Police then obtained a search warrant for a safe found in Farias’ truck and found fentanyl, alprazolam, psilocybin, and a large capacity firearm magazine.

Farias was sentenced to five years and a day in state prison as well as two years of probation.
