NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) – The North Smithfield Town Council President has called a special meeting next Monday to recall a controversial vote made earlier this week.

In a press release sent out Wednesday afternoon, North Smithfield Council President John Beauregard announced his intentions to recall a vote made earlier this week to request that town departments refrain from purchasing Nike products.

In the release, Beauregard cites backlash against the vote as the reason for the change.

Beauregard proposed the resolution this past Monday at a Town Council Meeting. After a heated debate, the resolution was passed with a 3-2 vote.

According to Beauregard, since the resolution was proposed and subsequently passed, he has witnessed an unexpected amount of backlash against himself and the town.

“I did not expect that my attempt to make a single, non-binding request to show a sign of respect for the men and women in law enforcement, especially those who have sacrificed their lives for our safety, would be so grossly and incorrectly distorted and misrepresented,” Beauregard said in the release.

In response to the backlash, Beauregard has called for a special meeting to recall the resolution, which will be held next Monday, September 24.
