JOHNSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — A Johnston man was arrested and charged with drunk driving after a fiery wrong way crash on 295 Thursday night.

Police say 57-year-old Robert Allyn Jr. was charged with driving under the influence of liquor and/or drugs (blood results pending) and driving so as to endanger, resulting in personal injury. He was arraigned from his hospital bed.

At approximately 7:45 p.m., Allyn Jr. drove south in the northbound high speed lane of the highway when his pick up hit a car heading north head-on.

The truck, operated by Allyn Jr., also caught fire forcing authorities to close three lanes south of Exit 7/Route 44 for a little over three hours.

As of 10:44 p.m., all lanes were open.

Both people transported were the sole occupants of each vehicle, and suffered non life-threatening injuries, said Laura Meade Kirk with Rhode Island State Police.

Allyn has been released on personal recognizance.
