Treasurer of RI charity admits to embezzling $186,000
The treasurer of a children’s charity admitted Tuesday to embezzling nearly $186,000.
67-year-old Robert Lonardo of Burrillville plead guilty to one count of wire fraud in Federal Court.
The Rhode Island Association for Cardiac Children was started by Lonardo’s mother. Court documents show he’s been stealing from it since 2013, shortly before she died.
"He was not motivated by greed his mother was ill and has passed away." // "he was using some of the money to pay for her medical bills,” said Lonardo’s attorney Tom Gulick. "He’s very remorseful and he made a bad decision. He is going to make full restitution."
We were told no comment by Lonardo’s wife when we visited their Burrillville home, which is also listed as the address of the non-profit.
"No one understands anything,” said Lonardo’s wife through a closed door. I’m not saying a word…. no comment at all."
Documents filed with the Secretary of State in 2015 still list Lena Lonardo as the President of the charity. They also list a Joseph Lonardo as director, both have been dead for years.
Another member listed on the board telling ABC 6 News that this news is "very sad.” He says he’s in shock and that nobody knew.
Lonardo is due back in court for sentencing in September.
He could face up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
