What could have been a two-day strike out here in front of Twin River ended in mere minutes, but with some good news for strikers – a tentative agreement.
About 100 of the 300 Twin River food and beverage workers represented by UNITE HERE Local 26 walked off the job at 4:00 am, demanding better healthcare.
They’ve been without a contract since April.
It seems the management heard their requests – minutes after the strike began a union representative came out from an hours-long negotiation meeting, delivering the good news.
"The back and forth was exhausting, nerve-wracking. I feel proud. I did it for these guys, moms, dads who need affordable medical. They need it, and we did it.
In a joint statement Twin River Management and the union say they’re "pleased to announce a settlement agreement. All employees will return to work and focus on providing an outstanding entertainment and gaming experience for our guests."
As for the strikers they say they’re excited to go back to work.
"We didn’t want to strike but we had to stand up for ourselves – and we did."
Union leaders will take the agreement to the full membership Saturday and hopefully have a contract signed by then as well.
