Two charged after man beaten with baseball bat in Wareham

A man is in critical condition after he was beaten with a baseball bat in Wareham Sunday.

Police responded to Onset Avenue for reports of a fight in the street around 1:30 a.m. On scene, officers located a man on the ground with a severe head laceration and injuries to his legs and arms. Several people were also found on scene.

The 44-year-old victim was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Police arrested 37-year-old Jose Madera, of Wareham, in the beating and for assaulting two officers.  63-year-old Peter "Bucky" Tavares was also arrested, and had threatened another male with a knife during the incident.

Madera and Tavares were arraigned Monday and are currently being held.

Madera is charged with:

  1. Assault w/Intent to Murder While Armed
  2. Assault w/ a Dangerous Weapon (Baseball Bat)
  3. Assault & Battery on a Police Officer (2 cts.)
  4. Threats to Commit a Crime
  5. Disorderly Conduct
  6. Disturbing the Peace

Tavares is charged with:

  1.  Assault w/ Dangerous Weapon (Knife)
  2. Disorderly Conduct
  3. Disturbing the Peace
