SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WLNE) – South Kingstown police announced the arrest of two drivers for allegedly driving under the influence in separate incidents this week.

Charles H. Lafreniere, 74, and William J. Moreland IV, 41, were arrested on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, for DUI.

Lafreniere was taken into custody at 4:40 p.m. on Tuesday, after crashing his car on Route 1 south, just north of Saugatucket Road. Police said they saw empty alcoholic beverage containers in his vehicle and said Lafreniere appeared highly intoxicated.

Officers arrested Moreland at 1:48 a.m. Wednesday after he was stopped for speeding on Tuckertown Road. Police said Moreland had watery eyes and a strong smell of alcohol on his breath.

Lafreniere was transported to South County Hospital for injuries sustained as result of his accident. He was released on a summons to appear in court.

Authorities said both Lafrieniere and Moreland were charged with driving under the influence of liquor, second offense, and refusal to submit to a chemical test.

Moreland was also charged with driving with an expired license, operating a vehicle with a suspended registration and speeding.

Both men are set to appear in Washington County District Court on January 11.
