Two people involved in plane crash near Quonset Point
NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — Two people were rescued after a plane crashed into the water near Quonset Point on Saturday.
A spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration said that a single-engine aircraft crashed into Narragansett Bay near Quonset State Airport at 2:51 p.m.
Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management spokesperson Mike Healey said a four-person crew from the Division of Law Enforcement was dispatched from Wickford after the crash.
The crew was able to reach the plane’s passengers, who made it out of the sunken aircraft and were treading water, and had them safely on board a rescue boat by 3:01 p.m.
Healey said neither passenger was hurt, but one was taken to the hospital for “apparent shock.”
The pilot told the rescue crew that the plane lost power before it could land, causing the crash.
The FAA added that the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the incident.
