UPDATE: Investigation ongoing in fatal Wareham train accident

WAREHAM, Mass. (WLNE) – Two people were killed Saturday night in Wareham after being struck by a train.

Wareham Police responded to railroad tracks near Minot Avenue around 7:30 p.m. Saturday to for reports that two pedestrians had been struck along the Cape Maine Line.

The victims, identified only as a 33-year-old female and a 36-year-old male, both from Wareham, were determined to be dead on scene.

The victims were on the tracks when they were struck, Plymouth County District Attorney’s office said. The conductor attempted to stop the train, activating the train’s emergency braking system prior to impact.

According to Police the chartered train had over 355 passengers on board at the time. All passengers were accounted for and none were injured.

According to Police, the Wareham School Department was called to arrange for buses to shuttle passengers off of the train, but ultimately, they were not needed.

The train was taken back to its starting point with the passengers on board.

Police said the incident does not appear suspicious, and is under investigation by Massachusetts State Police, Plymouth Country District Attorney, and Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority.

No further information is available at this time.
