Two Rhode Island healthcare facilities could close by end of year without sale deal

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A shortage in Rhode Island healthcare resources could worsen by the end of 2025 with the potential closings of Roger Williams Medical Center and Our Lady Fatima Hospital.

The closure of the CharterCARE properties are only pending at this time, as the a deal to sell the facilities would need to go through by December 31, 2025.

The ownership of the hospitals has been in question since 2022 when the nonprofit Centurion Foundation entered into talks to take them over.

The sale was approved by a judge in 2025 when CharterCARE’s parent company filed for bankruptcy in January.

The deal was imperiled when Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha said that Centurion didn’t meet certain requirements.

The CharterCARE nurse’s union United Nurses and Allied Professionals (UNAP) issued a statement about the potential closings.

“It will be an all out catastrophe for Rhode Island’s health care system if these important community hospitals and health care facilities close down,” said UNAP General Counsel Chris Callaci.

“Our system doesn’t have the capacity to treat the patients who will be displaced in the event of closure, and Rhode Island’s other hospitals will be completely overwhelmed with a flood of new patients. Thousands of nurses and other health professionals will lose their jobs.”

Callaci went to say that the CharterCARE Foundation holds $6 million in charitable assets that could help close the deal.
