U.S. Attorney warns Rhode Islanders of jury duty scam

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — United States Attorney Zachary Cunha said that Rhode Islanders should be aware of an ongoing scam involving missing jury duty.

The scammers call individuals instructing them to call a number claiming to be the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island.

Cunha said that callers are then told they have missed jury duty and must pay a fine immediately to avoid arrest or other consequences.

Callers are instructed to withdraw money and transfer it to the scammers, sometimes after converting it to cryptocurrency.

Cunha said that anyone who receives a call should not transfer money, and should contact their local police department or contact the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov.
