UMass Amherst student killed in Washington, D.C. shooting, ABC News reports

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WLNE) — A University of Massachusetts Amherst student was shot and killed after a shooting in Northwest Washington, D.C. on June 30, according to ABC News.

Police identified the victim as 21-year-old Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, of Granby, Massachusetts, who died after “getting caught in targeted gunfire.”

According to ABC News, the suspects exited a vehicle at an intersection in Northwest Washington, D.C. just before 10:30 p.m. and “opened fire on a group of people.”

Police found a 16-year-old boy, a woman, and Tarpinian-Jachym had been shot.

All three were taken to the hospital.

Tarpinian-Jachym died from his injuries on July 1.

Police told ABC News that the shooting was targeted, but Tarpinian-Jachym was not an “intended victim.”

According to ABC News, Tarpinian-Jachym was a rising senior at UMass Amherst studying finance and political science. He had been interning with Representative Ron Estes (R-Kan.) since June.

The shooting remains under investigation.
