DARTMOUTH, Mass. (WLNE) — A UMass Dartmouth student was life-flighted to Rhode Island Hospital after an early morning crash. He was alone when he smashed his car into a tree on campus.

Tire marks show exactly where a UMass Dartmouth student lost control of his car early Friday morning.

"I could hear it from my window on the other side of the dorms, it was like a loud screech, like a demonic sound it was so scary," says freshman Casey Lomax.

The bumper lays next to the tree the driver hit, shattered glass, a shoe and a cell phone left in the grass.

"Everyone was just crying and there was just stuff everywhere," says Jaylene Ojeda.

It happened on East Campus Road, right behind the freshman dorms. Campus police responded quickly before the driver was brought to Rhode Island Hospital in a helicopter.

"They told us he was being transported and the guy was just like you need to hope for the best," says Ojeda.

School officials say the 21 year old is a commuter student but they’re not releasing his name.

Some of his friends were emotional as they gathered at the spot this morning looking through the mess.

"He’s nice, he’s really friendly," says Ojeda.

The speed limit on that road is 15 miles per hour but students say most people don’t follow that.

"People skirt around Ring Road like its nothing," says Lomax.

Something some are hoping will change after this accident.

"i just hope they crack down on people. I’ve seen people out here speeding and no one does anything," says David Hurley, a freshman.

Police are still investigating what caused the crash. No word yet on the man’s condition.
