BOSTON, Mass. — Police responded to the area of 136 Gladstone Street in East Boston shortly before midnight to a report of a person armed with a gun when they came under fire.
According to police commissioner William Evans, the two wounded officers were pulled to safety as other officers engaged in a shootout with the suspect, who was eventually shot and killed.
The officers were identified as Officer Matthew Morris, a 12-year veteran of the BPD, and Officer Richard Cintolo, a 27-year veteran.
The two wounded officers were hospitalized in "extremely critical condition" early Thursday morning. They underwent surgery overnight and are recovering, police said.
The suspect was reportedly armed with a semi-automatic rifle and wearing a bulletproof vest.
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh spoke at a news conference early this Thursday morning commended the officers on the scene.
“This job is a tough job. Often times, people don’t look at the other side when it comes to police officers and we’re hoping they make a full recovery after we’ve learned that they’re in critical condition. We had a chance to go and talk to all of the officers that were involved tonight. They did a good job to be able to what they had to do as police officers in this city but also the community of East Boston is very supportive of them.”
