British police say a man who stabbed six people in London’s Russell Square was a Norwegian of Somali origin, but they have found no signs of radicalization.
Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley says the investigation “increasingly points to mental health issues” as lying behind the rampage.
He says one person was killed in the attack, an American woman.
The five injured people are British, American, Israeli and Australian. None has life-threatening injuries.
Early Thursday morning police reported that a 19-year-old man suspected in the rampage in Russell Square, which is near the British Museum, claimed the life of a woman in her 60s and police believe the suspect’s “mental health” was a factor.
One woman is dead, and up to six people are injured after a man carrying a knife attacked people in London’s Russell Square late Wednesday night, Metropolitan Police said.
“A man was arrested at 22:39 hours and a Taser was discharged by one of the arresting officers,” police said in a statement.
The man’s name has not been released.
Police officers and London Ambulance Service attended to the scene. Additional police units have been deployed to the area to “provide reassurance,” police said.
The female victim was treated at the scene but was pronounced dead a short time later.
“We await an update on the condition of the other persons injured and details of any other injuries,” police said.
Police said “terrorism is one possibility being explored at this stage.”
