UPDATE: The power outage on URI’s Kingston campus was caused after the high voltage switch in one of the substations failed Thursday evening, causing National Grid’s substation to sense it. It then interrupted power to the campus’ electrical system, preventing further damage to the campus grid.
Activities and classes at the University of Rhode Island resumed Friday after crews worked tirelessly to restore power to the darkened campus.
Power was restored Friday, Sept. 16 shortly after 2 a.m.
Classes had been canceled at The University of Rhode Island due to a power outage on Thursday evening.
According to campus police, there were some generators barely lighting some dorms, but the rest of the campus was without power.
A member of the Facilities Services and Emergency Management said there were crews on the scene attempting to restore power promptly.
The campus was returned to full power Friday, Sept. 16 at 2:30 a.m.
