Police negotiators end hours-long standoff with barricaded man
WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) — Warwick police took a man into custody after three hours of negotiation at a hotel in the city.
Pawtucket police sent out a notice to be on the lookout for a 47-year-old Pawtucket resident in crisis they were searching for.
The man’s car was spotted outside the Extended Stay America Hotel on metro Center Boulevard in Warwick.
The man barricaded himself in his room at the hotel with a handgun and told police he was suicidal.
Negotiators were able to convince the man to give himself up after approximately four hours and he was taken into custody peacefully, with heavily armored officers on the scene as well.
“Our negotiators did a fantastic job they were able to calm him down and he was able to give himself up without incident,” said Col. Brad Connor of the Warwick police.
A handgun was found in plain sight after a protective sweep of the hotel room.
No threats were made against police or other people inside the hotel.
People who were in the same wing of the hotel were evacuated and brought to the lobby area.
“So anybody that was located near the room in question was evacuated and brought to the lobby area of the hotel where they were safe and sound. Everyone else was unaffected by the incident,” said Connor.
The man was then escorted out of the hotel in handcuffs and placed in an ambulance.
“Our units did exactly what they were trained to do. Our negotiator did a fantastic job she was able to talk to the individual for about three hours and maintain dialogue with him and resolve this peacefully,” said Connor.
