UPDATE: Newport police arrest three additional suspects in officer assault incident

NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — Newport police have announced three new arrests in a Tuesday alleged assault of two police officers at the Festival Field Housing Development.

Keyshla Cruz Martinez, 33, Jose Cruz Ortiz, 40, and Mayra Custodio, 27, all of Newport, are charged Wednesday with simple assault, obstruction of an officer in the execution of their duty and disorderly conduct.

The new wave of arrests stem from an altercation at the housing development Tuesday, when officers responding to a call of a domestic incident were allegedly assaulted by multiple people.

Arriving officers identified Angel Cruz Martinez, 28, as the suspect in the incident which prompted the call.

After locating Martinez, the suspect allegedly punched and pushed officers as they tried to take him into custody.

Martinez was found to be wanted on multiple other charges including domestic simple assault, domestic disorderly conduct, vandalism and larceny.

As officers struggled with the suspect, several bystander began assaulting the officers, according to Newport police.

The altercation was quelled after additional officers arrived to assist police who responded to the initial call.

Three suspects were arrested at the initial scene:

  • Jose Carreras, 39, of Newport, charged with assault of a police officer, simple assault and disorderly conduct
  • Calvin Febles, 28, of Middletown, charged with disorderly conduct and obstructing an officer in the execution of their duty
  • Jetsenia Luna Schmidt, 37, of Newport, charged with disorderly conduct

The assaulted officers were treated for minor injuries at Newport Hospital and released.
