UPDATE: North Providence standoff comes to an end
NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A ten-hour standoff in North Providence came to a peaceful end this morning.
The North Providence Police Department arrived at a home on Charles Street around 4 p.m. for a wellness check, before finding a 60-year-old man with a gun refusing to come out of his home.
Police blocked off a portion of Miner Street nearby for most of the night, as they worked to get the suspect and his 92-year-old mother safely out of the home.
Police Chief Alfredo Ruggerio said that one of the major issues in their response was making sure they had the manpower to maintain the scene, with some officers having been on the job for nearly 16 hours.
Ruggerio said that once the suspect was out of sight, police ended up reaching the door and taking it down.
A brief struggle ensued, and no one was injured.
The man was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for a mental health evaluation.
He also said they did not find a weapon on the suspect but will be searching the home today.
The suspect was taken to the hospital for a mental health evaluation to get whatever help he may need.
Ruggerio said there should be an update on any possible charges later this morning.
