UPDATE: Standoff ends in Smithfield, man transported to hospital for evaluation

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) — A standoff in Smithfield has peacefully come to an end, according to officials.

The Smithfield Police Department was called yesterday afternoon to an incident where a 59-year-old man who was experiencing a “change in mental status.”

According to police, the individual had barricaded himself in a room inside the residence at Elmgrove Avenue, and was believed to be in a possession of a firearm.

Officers, including the members of the department’s negotiation team, were maintaining communication with the individual in hopes to bring the situation to a safe and peaceful solution.

Around 6:57 a.m., after almost 19 hours, police persuaded the subject to be transported to the hospital for evaluation without further incident.

There are currently no criminal charges at this time.

Police will continue to investigate the situation.
