UPDATE: Substitute teacher convicted of child rape sentenced to 40 years

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WLNE) — A former substitute teacher from Freetown who sexually assaulted a teenage girl was sentenced to up to 40 years in prison Wednesday.

Gilbert Hernandez, 58, will also serve 10 years parole upon release from prison.

The conditions of his parole include no unsupervised contact with minors, no dating the parents of a minor and not being allowed to possess any photographs of the victim in the case.

According to Bristol County District attorney’s office, Hernandez assaulted a 14-year-old girl who was close friends with his son.

The girl was also a student at the school Hernandez was a substitute teacher for.

He’ll be sentenced today on multiple charges, including aggravated rape of a child and indecent assault and battery.

He’ll be sentenced in Fall River Superior Court Wednesday morning.
