Update: Suspect arrested in Dartmouth murder investigation

DARTMOUTH, Mass. (WLNE) – After further investigation by Dartmouth Police and several other agencies, officials have arrested 23-year-old Franklin Antonio Amaya Paredes of New Bedford on a murder warrant. He was arrested Friday night in New Bedford.

Amaya Paredes is accused of shooting and killing 27-year-old Jose Cortez Cornejo of New Bedford, whose body was found on the side of Horseneck Rd. in Dartmouth on Tuesday, July 14th.

Amaya Paredes will be arraigned on Monday in the New Bedford District Court.

Police in Dartmouth identified the victim of a suspected homicide as 27-year-old Jose Cortez Cornejo of New Bedford.

Dartmouth Police received a 911 call from a driver around 5:10 a.m. Monday, who reported seeing Cornejo’s body collapsed on the side of the road in the area of 180 Horseneck Rd.

According to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, police and paramedics arrived on scene and located the body. An investigation determined a homicide had most likely taken place.

Cornejo’s body was taken to the medical examiner’s office Monday, where a preliminary autopsy found that Cortez Cornejo died of apparent gunshot wounds, police said Thursday.

The Bristol County DA’s office says their homicide unit prosecutors continue to actively investigate this homicide.
