UPDATE: Two-month-old child dies in Newport housing development, officer assaulted
NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — Newport police and fire personnel responded to the Festival Field Housing Development Thursday at 10:55 p.m. for reports of an unresponsive two-month-old child.
The child was transported to Newport Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
According to Newport police, while Newport Fire Department personnel were performing life saving measures on the infant, a large unruly crowd gathered around the scene and a physical altercation broke out.
While attempting to break up the fight, one Newport police officer was punched in the face.
No immediate arrests were made during the altercation and Newport detectives are investigating the incident.
A 17-year-old juvenile was taken into custody for felony delinquent charges and will be arraigned in family court.
