Wednesday marked a big day at the University of Rhode Island.

It was the grand opening of the University’s new Gender and Sexuality Center.

Many students and officials showed up to support the cause.

22-year-old Jessica Brand, a URI graduate, stood before the crowd and told her story of transitioning to a woman. She said she always knew she was a girl growing up, and is thankful now that students like her will have a safe haven to go to.

“Be yourself, no matter what your body type, what your background, your sexual orientation, your gender identity, or as in my case, your voice.”

In just a few days, Jessica will undergo gender transition surgery at a hospital outside San Francisco.

The center at URI was pushed mainly by students, and cost the University $2.1 million.
