Veterans Day events across Southern New England

Every year on Veterans Day we take time to thank service men and women who helped protect our country and those who continue to do so today.

Here’s a list of events across Southern New England that are taking place today to honor our Veterans.

RHODE ISLAND

Bristol

11:30— The Bristol Veterans Council/ RI Office of Veterans affairs is hosting a ceremony at the new RI Veterans Home, 480 Metacom Ave., Bristol. Governor Gina Raimondo is scheduled to be in attendance.

Cranston

9:30— The Park View Veterans Day 5K Run/Walk will take place today. It starts and finishes at Roger Williams Park, Park Avenue entrance (across from the Park View Middle School). Registration is $30 and proceeds benefit Operation Stand Down RI and Park View Middle School programs.

4:55— The parade proceeds down Park Avenue to Cranston East Stadium, 23 Jordan Ave. It will be preceded by speeches from city leaders starting at 4:30. The festivities will continue on prior to the Cranston HS vs Portsmouth football game at 6pm.

East Greenwich

10— A parade will step off from Academy Field and then head down First Avenue. There will be a wreathe laying ceremony at the corner of Cliff St. A closing ceremony will be held at the Town Hall.

Newport

11— A ceremony will be held in front of Newport city Hall, 43 Broadway and will feature the Newport Artillery Company and other local veterans organizations.

North Kingstown

9— A remembrance wreath-laying ceremony will happen at the Civil War Memorial, North Kingstown Town Hall, 80 Boston Neck Rd.

10— The parade will then take place at Wilson Park and following West Main and Brown streets through Wickford village to Boston Neck Road and onto Fairway Drive. It will stop for wreath a laying at the monuments at Town Hall and Veterans Memorial Park.

Pawtucket

11— A ceremony and wreath laying will happen at the Veterans’ Memorial Park, Roosevelt Ave and Exchange St.

Portsmouth

9— A ceremony will be hosted by the American Legion Post 18 and VFW Post 5390 at town hall, 220 East Main Rd. It will be followed by a brunch at 11 am at the VFW located at 822 Anthony Rd. The cost is $8 per person; children 11 and younger $4, veterans eat free.

Providence

12— A ceremony will be held at the flagpole on Brown University’s College Green across from RI Hall, Waterman, Brown and George Streets. It will then head to the Soldier’s Arch, Ruth J. Simmons Quad for a wreath-laying ceremony followed by addresses from Brown and RI communities.

Scituate

10:30— A parade, sponsored by the American Legion Scituate Post 19, will step off from Berkander Field and Institute Lane. It will follow onto Route 6 and turn onto Route 116 to the Old Historical Congregational Church for ceremonies.

South Kingstown

10— A parade steps off from Holly Street and turns onto Main St, to High Street and ends at Saugatucket park where a ceremony will take place at 11

Warwick

10— Operation Stand Down RI will host a veterans resource fair at the Warwick Mall. Representative from the VA will be on hand regarding benefit assistance. The Rhode Island Department of labor and Training, OSDRI housing and employment will also be on site. The event runs until 6 pm. 

MASSACHUSETTS

Fall River

12:30—A ceremony to honor all veterans will be held at the Veterans’ Memorial monument located in upper Kennedy Park on South Main St. (across from St. Anne’s Church)

1— A parade will step off from upper Kennedy Park and will travel north on South Main Street to the Fall River Government Center building for concluding ceremonies.

Norton

10— A parade will assemble at the Henri A. Yelle School and proceed on West Main St. to the monument on East Main at Pine Street. From there it will return to the Town common for ceremonies.

New Bedford

11— A parade will step off and will march east on Union Street to Pleasant Street, then turn left onto Pleasant St to the reviewing stand located in front of the New Bedford Main Library. At the conclusion of the parade there will be a Veterans’ Day Service. Dean Lawrence, A New Bedford police officer and retired US Army Veterans will serve at Grand Marshall and will deliver the keynote address.

Seekonk

11— A ceremony will be conducted by the Seekonk Department of Veterans Services in collaboration with the Friends of Seekonk Veterans’ Memorial Park Committee. It will be held at 410 Newman Ave.
