Violent weekend in Providence leaves 3 hurt

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Multiple people were hospitalized after a violent weekend in Providence.

The Providence Police Department is investigating a shooting and two stabbings that happened on Sunday.

Police were called to a report of shots fired around 12:30 a.m. on Payton Street.

While officers officers were responding, the department was alerted of a vehicle speeding on nearby Broad Street.

Officers followed the vehicle to Rhode Island Hospital, according to a police report.

The driver, suffering from a gunshot wound, was put in a wheelchair and rushed into the emergency room.

Officers back at the shooting scene saw eight shell casings on the ground.

Police also responded to two reported stabbings that afternoon.

A 31-year-old woman was stabbed in the leg just before 3:45 p.m. while in a parked car at the Dairy King on Cranston Street.

Officers found the victim leaning against a nearby fence. She told police she had been stabbed by another woman.

At the same time, police were called to Rhode Island Hospital for a report of a 40-year-old man who drove himself to the emergency room after he was stabbed multiple times.

According to a police report, the man pulled in the ambulance only area, temporarily blocking rescue crews before police moved his vehicle.

As of Monday, the shooting victim was stable and undergoing more medical attention. The condition of the stabbing victims were unknown.

Police did not immediately release their names.

All three incidents are under investigation.
