Voters reject Chariho School District bond for elementary schools
CHARLESTOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — Voters rejected a school bond that would build three new elementary schools for the district.
Chariho Regional School District represents the towns of Charlestown, Richmond, and Hopkinton.
The bond, which was $150 million, would pay for the cost of demolition, design, and the construction of all three schools.
The schools are 75 to 90 years old.
In a statement, School Superintendent Gina Picard said:
“I want to thank everyone who voted in the school bond referendum. While the bond may have been rejected, we view this as an opportunity to regroup, reassess, and emerge stronger. Our resolve remains unshaken as we embark on a new journey, forging a fresh path toward securing the resources our schools need to thrive. Together, with renewed determination and community support, we will craft a new plan that reflects our shared values and aspirations for our children’s future. As the saying goes, “You miss 100% of the shots you do not take.”
