BRISTOL, R.I. (WLNE) – A unique new course being offered to students at Roger Williams University has been organized to unpack the lessons of one Oscar-winning superhero film.

“Wakanda Forever”, taught by Assistant Professor of American Studies Aaron C. Allen, explores the racial context and implications of the movie “Black Panther”.

“This critical analysis of popular culture and everyday media consumption is one of the major undertakings of the American Studies Department at RWU and is already having a profound impact on Allen’s students,” the University said in an announcement Tuesday. “The course is giving students the tools to unpack what they see in films like ‘Black Panther’ so that they can continue to develop a critical eye both in and outside the classroom.”

The film took home three Oscars on Sunday, including Best Original Score, Best Production Design, and Best Costume Design, and was nominated for Best Picture.
