WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) —  Two fires under investigation by the the Warwick Fire Department  have been declared arson.

Officials responded to the first fire at approximately 1:00 a.m. Monday on 429 Seaview Drive, in the Oakland Beach section of the city. The second fire happened a couple hours later down the road on 26 Strand Avenue.

"A second fire broke out at a home on sea view drive that’s only about 800 feet away. Luckily crews were able to put that out quickly. All of this in frigid temperatures," said Warwick Fire Chief James McLaughlin.

"In this weather it’s important that first arriving crews…especially in this case the crews that were working the first fire…it’s important to get in and rotate the crews."

Warwick Fire tells ABC6 News that both homes were unoccupied at the time of the fire and that they appeared to be summer cottages.

There is still no word on how they started.

The investigation is ongoing.
