Warwick man accused of sexually assaulting Michigan girl to remain behind bars

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – The Warwick man accused of driving over 850 miles to pick up a Michigan teen he met online appeared in federal court in Providence Thursday afternoon.

Charles Morancey, 43, was arraigned on August 7 in Kent County District Count on four counts of third-degree sexual assault after investigators say he drove to Allegan County, Michigan to pick up a 15-year-old he met through social media, brought her back to his Warwick home, and engaged in sexual activity with the minor.

On Thursday, Morancey was arraigned on two additional charges, Interstate Travel to Engage in Sexual Activity with a Minor, and Receipt of Child Pornography.

Morancey was arrested earlier this month on a traffic stop after investigators found the teen inside his Warwick home. Police said she answered the door when they knocked.

Police were able to track the girl’s location after she logged in to her Instagram account, showing her IP address tied to the Warwick home.

Federal prosecutors said in court Thursday, that Morancey’s conduct in the case is “egregious” and said he’s a flight risk, an extreme danger to the community, and should remain behind bars.

Morancey will be back in federal court on September 11.
