The suspect in a domestic stabbing from over the weekend is being held without bail. He was arraigned at the hospital today and referred to a public defender.
Warwick Police arrested 20-year-old Jared Rogers and charged him with murder. They say he stabbed his brother and his nephew around 5:30 a.m. Saturday at 149 Haswill Street, killing one of them.
"It’s really a sad situation you know,” said Shirley Vizzacco, a neighbor.
Police saying 20 year-old Jared Rogers stabbed his 19-year-old nephew Michael Rogers to death and stabbed his 30-year-old brother David, sending him to the hospital.
"We know at this point that the suspect had been drinking prior to the murder,” said Captain Christopher Stewart of Warwick Police.
Jared’s mother was there when it all happened. She called 911 around 5:30 a.m. Saturday. Jared fled the scene.
"It’s awful. I’m shocked that it happened,” said Sharon Ferrara, a neighbor.
Sharon Ferrara lives next door to the Rogers and couldn’t believe what happened to a family she describes as friendly and quiet.
"I was horrified because I know the people next door really well. The kids and the mom and the mom’s really nice and the kids have always been nice and polite,” Ferrara said.
But Jared Rogers has an extensive criminal history, including an incident last February. Police say he called a hospital saying he injured a child and he would hurt him more if he wasn’t admitted. It all turned out to be a lie and the child never existed.
"He has an extensive history. Some of it’s violent. Certainly nothing like this,” said Stewart.
After a manhunt, police found and arrested Rogers in North Providence around 3 p.m. Saturday, but neighbors are left wondering why this happened and what’s going to happen to the family.
"I feel terrible I can’t imagine what would have happened to make that happen,” Ferrara said.
So far there is no word on the motive. Police say the suspect’s brother David is in stable condition at Rhode Island Hospital. They expect him to survive.
Rodgers is being charged with murder and two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon in a dwelling house. He pleads not guilty on all three charges.
A no contact order was issued for David Rogers.
The bail hearing is set for April 11th in Kent District Court .
