Warwick School Committee and Mayor continue to battle over funding

WARWICK, RI (WLNE) – Mayor Joseph Solomon is now saying he won’t meet with the school committee unless it’s to talk about bringing back programs cut from the budget.

Superintendent Philip Thornton told ABC6 he got an e-mail from the city’s attorney last Friday saying Mayor Solomon won’t meet to talk about the 2020 budget anymore.

Instead he’ll only meet to talk about sports or extra-curricular activities.

The school committee may be forced to take legal action, according to Thornton.

“As we prepare to mediate the FY19-FY20 budget, my priorities will continue to be that of the schoolchildren, and the sports and extracurricular activities that they deserve,” Solomon said in a statement. “I will not allow the emotions of our students, parents, faculty or staff to be used as pawns as these discussions proceed.”
