A teacher at Gorton Junior High School is being charged with first and second degree sexual assault.

Mario Atoyan, 49, of North Kingstown, was charged today after the alleged sexual assault of a 15-year-old relative last June, according to the Attorney General’s Office.

Atoyan is suspended without pay pending the outcome of the charges.

A connected call released to parents from the principal of Gorton Junior High, Jeff Taylor, said that it is “unfortunate news” and that as a community, their “hearts and best wishes go out to all who may have been affected by this situation.”  Councilors are also on hand to talk with students if needed.

Atoyan was indicted today in Washington County Superior Court. Bail was set at $10,000 personal recognizance and he was ordered to have no contact with the victim. The Washington County Grand Jury reported out a secret, sealed indictment on March 20th, 2015, charging Atoyan with one count each of first degree sexual assault and second degree sexual assault.

North Kingstown Police are handling the case.
