Washington Bridge demolition to close street in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Transportation said it will begin bridge deck and beam demolition of the old Washington Bridge beginning on the night of Sept. 8.

RIDOT said that the closures are scheduled to take place from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday to Thursday nights for two to three weeks.

Drivers should follow a signed detour using India Street, Wickenden Street, and South Main and South Water streets, while the on-ramp to Iinterstate 195 West at Gano Street will remain open.

Demolition work will also begin the same days, but RIDOT said they should not impact traffic.

Future closures of Gano Street and Waterfront Drive are expected to occur in late September or early October, which RIDOT said will be announced at a later date.
