Washington Bridge work to continue with substructure demo this week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Transportation has provided another update on the demolition progress of the Washington Bridge.

A contractor will remove parts of the substructure on the East Providence and Providence sides of the river this week.

Demolition crews will break up the old bridge components during the day, and RIDOT said there won’t be any overnight hammering.

Demolition of the substructure over the water is expected to begin in early spring.

Starting next week on Monday and Tuesday there will be one-way traffic on Waterfront Drive under the Washington Bridge to install sensors for the structural health monitoring system.
