Weaver: RISP aware of online serial killer rumors, but not commenting right now

Colonel Darnell Weaver of the Rhode Island State Police answers questions from ABC6 at Scituate headquarters Friday (WLNE).

SCITUATE, R.I. (WLNE) — As unverified rumors of a possible New England serial killer continue to circulate online, Rhode Island State Police aren’t saying much.

In response to a question from ABC6 News Friday, Col. Darnell Weaver said he’s aware of the rumors, but won’t comment on the specifics right now.

“We don’t comment on ongoing investigations, but we are aware of the incidents in the other, surrounding states,” Weaver said. “At an appropriate time, we will disseminate any information.”

Rumors sparked again Wednesday after a human leg bone was found in Westerly.

Westerly Police Chief Paul Gingerella said the case remains under investigation, but no foul play is suspected.

The discovery in Westerly followed the discovery of human remains in Foster in March, later identified as those of Michele Romano, who had previously been reported missing.

State police are also investigating the Romano case. Weaver said Friday he had no comment on that “ongoing investigation.”

Rhode Island State Police search the home of Michele Romano on April 2, 2025 after her remains were discovered in Foster (WLNE).

It also followed similar discoveries in other states, including human remains found in Killingly, Connecticut on April 10.

Authorities in those states have repeatedly and emphatically denied any connection between the discoveries.

After the discovery in Killingly, a Connecticut State Police spokesperson told ABC6 News there was no information to suggest any connection to human remains discovered in Rhode Island and along the Connecticut shoreline, and there was no known threat to the public.
