West Warwick remembers 9/11

WEST WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) — The residents of West Warwick remembered the tragedy of September 11, 2001 and honored the lives lost 23 years ago during a ceremony Wednesday evening.

The community gathered at Riverpoint Park to reflect back on a day that touched every single American and changed the country forever.

Like so many people on that tragic day, veteran David Singleton remembers the exact moment he heard the news.

“It look the life out of me, it broke my heart, because being a veteran it just tears me up every time I remember,” said Singleton. “I never miss one of these.”

9/11 forced the country together like never before, which is why David Malone with the American Legion Department of Rhode Island said it really is so important to never forget.

“We have to keep continuing these types of memorials so that we don’t forget about this and the importance of that day, because if you forget it will happen again. We need to try to get back to that point where we had the unity that we did that day,” explained Malone.

While the flag was raised at half mast and the national anthem played, the youth of West Warwick was there, eagerly taking in the ceremony.

“I can’t explain emphasize enough how important that is, we don’t want them to grow up not understanding what this is,” said Malone.
