WESTERLY, R.I. (WLNE) — It’s been the talk of the town this summer, rumors swirling about what the mysterious object buried beneath the water on East Beach could be.
"My husbands a scientist and he was trying to figure it out," says Tori Holt.
"I think it’s a UFO but other people think differently," adds Charley Kellogg.
Dozens of people getting a front row seat to the show as a huge excavator worked to dig up answers.
"It’s intriguing," says Marilyn Brockmann.
"We wanted to be here for the moment because it’s really cool, everyone’s been talking about it and its just really a fun event," says Kellogg.
After doing some research, the East Beach Association thought the object could be a piece of old equipment used to measure currents but as they brought the object to shore piece by piece, what they were finding just didn’t match up.
"All of the experts told me that those mounts are 3 to 4 feet across but this thing turned out to be 7 or 8 feet across," says Peter Brockmann, who spearheaded the removal.
Now, it seems there are more questions than answers.
"I don’t know if we solved any mystery here today. Frankly I think it’s even more of a mystery now," says Brockmann.
And it may not be the end result that people were hoping for toady, but the East Beach Association is not done yet. They’ll be sending pictures and videos to several organizations and experts across the nation in hopes of finally solving the mystery.
