PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- The Rhode Island Department of Health issued a boil water advisory for customers of the Westerly Water System on Monday night.

Due to a water main break, a loss of pressure could leave water vulnerable to bacteria and other organisms, RIDOH said.

Anyone relying on the Westerly Water system is urged to boil their water “vigorously” for at least one minute.

The warning applies to water used for for “drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation,” according to the statement.

Bottled water may also be used in place of tap water.

Residents should refrain from washing infants and young children in affected water. Adults may bathe in the water, but RIDOH urges residents to refrain from inadvertently swallowing any in the shower or bathtub.

The department will issue another statement when the advisory is lifted.

More info can be found on RIDOH’s website.
