Whale is found stranded in South Kingstown

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management shared that they are responding to a stranded whale near Succotash Marsh.
Marine biologists have estimated the whale to be approximately 30 feet long. It is not showing signs of injury at this time, but it is to believe to be in poor health condition.
DEM and staff from the Mystic Aquarium are monitoring what appears to be a fin whale. They will continue to monitor the whale through today’s tidal cycle and hope that it is well enough to free itself at high tide.
If the whale is incapable of freeing itself, the team will evaluate other options.
DEM asks that the public keep an appropriate distance from the whale.
This is a developing story.
