The New Bedford teacher killed in the Taunton rampage is being honored with an award for his heroic actions.
George Heath will be this year’s recipient of the Madeline Amy Sweeney Award for Civilian Bravery.
Heath jumped in to protect a pregnant waitress during the knife attack, later dying from his injuries. His wife, Rosemary, got the call about the award from the Lieutenant Governor Saturday afternoon, while she was hosting a party for her closest friends and family.
Rosemary says, “It’s a very big surprise and the fact that this is our annual party and that I’m going to have family and friends here to tell them all about it, it’ll be good. Really good.”
Mrs. Heath will accept the award on her husband’s behalf at the Massachusetts State House on September 11th.
