Winter Blast: Everything’s closed (almost)

The snow day and travel ban are keeping many local businesses closed this afternoon. We found an open sign flashing in the window of one west end laundromat. We walked through more than a foot of snow, went inside, but saw no one. Just empty dryers. It seems like most everyone heeded the warnings, and hunkered down during the winter blast.

Every thing from coffee shops to markets and bars are closed due to weather. But some people still had to report to work. Francisco Garcia of Providence never left.

“All night. We started at 11 pm yesterday. Still going. We’ll go until it’s done,” he said.

Garcia was called in to help with, you guessed it, snow removal. The strong winds created drifts and make his job even more challenging.

“Because of the blizzard see all that side it pushed all the snow on that side on the corners so we have to clean it,” said Garcia.

During the height of the storm brakes became necessary.

“We came out here, started working but had to stop. The wind is starting to die down a little bit but it’s still up there,” said James Clayton, Supervisor for Winn Residential.

In all the guys will clear out the areas of 26 Providence apartment buildings. Their tenants’ safety is a top priority. It’s hard to say when businesses will re–open, and life will go back to normal. But one thing is for sure, they’re will be a lot of digging out to do before hand.
