Winter storm to bring snow, coastal mix to Southern New England this weeekend
Providence has not had a 6"+ snow event in almost 2 years, but has a good chance to end that streak soon
A winter storm remains on track to bring at least some snow to the area this weekend.
First, clouds will increase overnight with a chance of a few snow showers Thursday morning as a cold front approaches. Once the front passes through Thursday afternoon, temperatures will begin to tumble. Wind chills Thursday night into Friday morning could dip as low as 5-10°!
The cold air will moderate a bit but remain in place in advance of the weekend storm. Precipitation will begin Saturday night and last through the day Sunday before tapering off Sunday night. Regardless of how much snow we pickup, this will be an impactful storm that will likely cause hazardous road conditions. Snow is likeliest inland and in the higher elevations, and while some degree of mixing is likely at the coast, there is still considerable uncertainty on the track and intensity of the storm.
While still too early to determine specific snow totals, there is around a 50% chance of 6″ or more for northern Rhode Island – slightly less for Providence, about 40%. It has been almost two years since Providence has seen a 6″+ snow event.
