Wintry mix turns into snow piles in North Smithfield

NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) — Snow plows were busy in North Smithfield on Sunday morning during the first winter storm of the season.

Northern Rhode Island was expected to see the most snow in the state. Snow was continuously coming down in Burrillville, nearing 5 inches.

Rhode Island officials warned drivers ahead of the storm to stay vigilant and reduce their speed.

Drivers should keep a safe distance from plows on the roads and to never attempt to pass a plow truck.

A second wave of snow was expected later Sunday morning and into the afternoon. A flash freeze was possible following a significant drop in temperatures.

Drivers were advised to avoid any unnecessary travel as the snow came down.
