NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) – After police attempted to pull over a woman for erratic driving, a pursuit ensued, and ended with a crash into North Smithfield Town Hall.
Around 9 p.m. Wednesday night, police reported to Victory Highway to investigate.
The driver has been identified as Stephanie Plante, 32, of Johnston. One other passenger was in the car at the time but has not been identified.
Plante was transported to Landmark Medical Center for evaluation, then brought to police once released.
When officials asked Plante in court Thursday why she didn’t stop when police tried to pull her over, she admitted that she’d been drinking.
Police say they found her after she smashed her car into the corner of the town hall building splitting her car in two.
Police called Plante combative when they approached her and she even assaulted an officer which forced them to pepper spray her.
Several kinds of drugs including Marijuana were found inside Plante’s car, according to police.
Plante nor her passenger were hurt in the crash, police say.
Plante is facing charges that include three counts of Possession of Narcotics, Driving Under the Influence, Assault on a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest, Reckless Driving, Disorderly Conduct, Possession of Marijuana and Driving with a Suspended License – 3rd Offense.
Her bail was set at $5,000 with surety after she was arraigned Thursday in district court but she was later presented as a violator in Kent County Superior Court due to previous pending charges and was ordered held without bail.
